Once again, stupidity in the name of charity, Mrs Swale-Pope started her quest to walk around the globe, and also raise money for various cancer and orphan charities, more than two years ago after her husband died of prostate cancer.Quote "She left her home in Tenby, Pembrokeshire with nearly no money and few supplies. "and when she gets into trouble the local rescue services will once again have to put their live on the line, waste more taxpayers money and tie up valuable resources.Quote " But an Alaska National Guard spokesman told the Anchorage Daily News they would not be taking her back to the island. "Our job is to rescue people, not to provide a taxi service," said Major Mike Haller. Thank god for common sense. Why do people do this, and why are they not charged with reckless endangerment when they are rescued?

Undoubtedly the most famous Welsh-American yet was John L (for Llewellyn) Lewis, appropriately enough a leader of the Mineworkers' union, who went on to found the modern, industrial union movement through his leadership of the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations). The rise in living standards that created the post-war "American middle class" owes more to John L Lewis than to any other single person.
Lewis famously broke away from the old unions with a single blow - an actual punch, to the leader of the Carpenters Union on the floor of the 1935 Convention of the American Federation of Labor, because of the AFL's refusal to organize poor and immigrant workers. Polls taken at the time showed that by 1940 Lewis' name was best-known in the USA after President Franklin D Roosevelt. Let's hope that a future Presidential address will acknowledge this deservedly famous son of Wales! Paris Welsh Society
The Annual Saint David’s Day Dinner of the Paris Welsh Society was held on Saturday 4th March 2006 at the restaurant “Les Noces de Jeanette”.
The ladies dressed our tables with daffodils and Welsh flags and the attending members had an excellent four-course meal with aperitif, wine and coffee. Our entertainment this year was provided by Huw Rhys-Evans, an operatic tenor of international renown, accompanied by Mr Dafydd Harries, who sang and played a variety of popular Welsh songs. They were relayed by our own local talent, Jim Rowlands, accompanied by Hywel John on the Celtic harp. It was generally agreed that the standard of music was outstanding and both acts were warmly received by the audience. Even the restaurant manager sent his compliments!
The principal guest, Mr Jeffrey Thomas, the British Consul-General proposed a toast to the Society. In his finely crafted speech, he recalled the early history of the Paris Welsh Society, which is over a hundred years old and the oldest of the British societies in Paris, a fact we have to be proud of. He underlined the importance of the actions of the society in the modern world in fostering Franco-Gallic relations, France being Wales’ 4th export market in economic terms.
John Evans, President, replied. After giving thanks to our Secretary for her work in informing our members of our events and to Mr and Mrs J Hawkins for their hospitality to our guest entertainers from Wales, he read some anecdotes from the Minutes book from the time of the re-formation of the Society in 1953. The fact that the Society had already held a St David’s Day event at the very same restaurant in 1961 did not go unmentioned. He finished with a quick review of upcoming events for 2006. The traditional Tombola was drawn by Mrs Leslie Thomas and twenty prizes were distributed. The evening ended at midnight with some very good communal singing led by our guest artistes.John EVANSjohnevans@wanadoo.frParis

New Novel by Welsh-American Author
Bardsong Press is delighted to announce the release of THE ANVIL STONE, by award-winning author Kathleen Cunningham Guler. This book is the third in her four-part Macsen’s Treasure Series of historical novels that include INTO THE PATH OF GODS and IN THE SHADOW OF DRAGONS.
Set in the fifth-century period leading to King Arthur’s rise to power and told from the Celtic point of view, THE ANVIL STONE continues the adventures of spy and master of disguise Marcus ap Iorwerth and his wife Claerwen. The story begins with rival factions instigating war and while Marcus sets out to quash their treachery, Claerwen discovers those same factions are also searching for one of Britain’s most cherished symbols—a magnificent sword of the ancient high kings. Lost for decades, it is part of Britain’s future and must pass to a great king called Arthur whose golden reign has been prophesied to come. With battle about to erupt, Marcus learns an assassin who has been hounding him may be the only one who could lead him to the sacred sword.
Ms. Guler has studied Celtic history and Arthurian legend for more than twenty years in both the United States and Great Britain and has published numerous articles, essays, short stories and poetry. A descendant of the Celtic nations of Wales and Scotland, she is a member of the Historical Novel Society and the International Arthurian Society. Her books are available from bookstores and online. www.bardsongpress.com
As always, the newsletter is excellent, and the messages from Welsh people all over the world add the greatest enjoyment. Thank you for putting all the components together for a good read!
An idea has been rattling around in my head for several months. Let me run this past you.
It's clear there's a housing crisis in Wales for at least two reasons. One is the prohibitive cost of houses. The other is the influx of English people buying up what's available. One or both of these reasons severely inhibit young Welsh people from buying a house in which to raise their families.
Would it be possible to form a non-profit group comprised of all Welsh associations in the States? The idea would be to pool our funds, buy houses in Wales, then work with real estate agents to give priority to Welsh (speaking?) people. It's a complicated undertaking; I imagine some international law and real estate policies would be involved.
Do you think this is workable, and is it worth taking up such a project?
Best regards, Theresa Clark

Thanks for the material you send to us it always makes interesting reading. I have a question. Would you be able to help us in our quest to find some financial backers? Celtica Radio has been on-line for nearly six years, and for the most part funded out of our own pockets. We are looking to raise enough money to expand our station and build the necessary studios, and underwrite the running costs during the crucial start-up and growth time of the business. Because we are a completely independent [and wholly Welsh owned] company, with a mission statement of noble values, and promotion of our unique culture, the established corporate broadcasters will not support us. I understand that nothing is for free in this world, and my group would be prepared to have meaningful discussions with any interested party who shares our values, and understands our culture. I also know that a significant amount of money goes to the exchequer, when it could be put to use in supporting a business such as ours. And of course, such investment is tax deductible. Have a look through our website at www.celticaradio.com have listen to our programming, showcasing artists from Wales, other Celtic nations and the rest of the world, communicated by the voices representing all the areas of Wales, and one or two other Celtic nations too. We really could do with some philanthropic assistance. Best wishes, Bill Everatbilleveratt@hotmail.comManaging DirectorCeltica Radio LtdUK - 01656 720101

Colorado Welsh Society presents "The Welsh Merlin"
We usually think of Merlin as the ancient, wise magician in a pointy hat, but Merlin is really much more when we consider his Welsh roots. Celtic folklorist Larry Eson, Ph.D., will present "Merlin in Early Welsh and Arthurian Tradition" on Saturday, March 25, 7:00 pm, at Delaney's Pub, 1801 Blake St., Denver
The legends, poems, and prophecies of Merlin have long played a central role in the early literature and culture of Wales and Western Europe. In some stories Merlin advises King Arthur and guides the Knights of the Round table on their epic quest for the Holy Grail. In various Arthurian tales, Merlin oversees the birth of Arthur and his acquisition of Excalibur, the magical sword of kingship.
In some medieval stories, Merlin is a wild man who goes mad and retreats to the woods before becoming a great poet and prophet. In other tales, he is the all-knowing boy prodigy who relates the stirring tale of the red and white dragons hidden beneath Vortigern's Castle, which is the origin story of the national symbol of Wales, the Red Dragon. Larry Eson has been studying Celtic legends and folktales for almost two decades. He received his Ph.D. degree in Folklore & Mythology from UCLA and has presented numerous conference papers on early Celtic literature. Larry is especially interested in Welsh and Irish folk traditions. He is working on a book based on his dissertation, "Merlin and the Celtic Wild Man."
Each month the Colorado Welsh Society sponsors Noson Gymreig, Welsh Culture Night, at the Celtic Tavern in LoDo, Denver's lower downtown historic district. A group of 15 to 20 people gather at 6:00 pm for drinks and socializing. Dinner can be ordered from the pub menu, which includes welsh rarebit and leek and potato soup. The program begins at 7 pm and is free and open to the public. For more information contact Judith James at JudithMJ@aol.com or 303-830-7675 or Sam Kuntz at sam.kuntz@comcast.net or 303.745.5526.http://home.att.net/~coloradowelsh/index.html
hope you are well. My name is Sian Hickman and I am head of the press office for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in Wales. Please forgive me if I have already made contact, as there are so many Welsh Societies I am trying to communicate with!!! 2006 sees two huge anniversaries for Rhondda Cynon Taf and Wales as a whole, namely the 150th anniversary of the national anthem and the 200th anniversary of the Old Bridge in Pontypridd. To celebrate this Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is holding a large number of events. This is to reinstate pride in our communities, raise the profile of the anthem and create cultural interest. One of the highlights of the events is a Guinness World Record event, to be held during the May bank holiday at the end of the month. I think this would be an incredible coup for the Welsh nation to be singing the anthem across the world on one set day and time. I would be so pleased if you could make contact with me so we can discuss this further and try and make this year a huge event for the Welsh. Kind regards Sian HickmanSian.E.Hickman@rhondda-cynon-taff.gov.uk

I would like to announce the up coming book, Blaenafon- Birthplace of Steel & Sacrifice (Mountain Thoughts) by Mr Allan Matthews of Blaenafon, Wales. This is an amazing book written from the heart of a man who made a promise and kept it. It has been almost five years in the writing and will be released in aproximately 2 months. Things right now are going really crazy as Allan has well over 150 orders from his area, Browning Book Store there wants the book and here in the USA people from Welsh societies are screaming for the book. There is a huge Welsh community in and around the Penn- Maryland area that want to order the book in bulk just as soon as it is available. Because of all of this the publisher is putting a rush on the printing of it. There is also going to be an article and reviews in the Ninnau, the largest and oldest Welsh newspaper in the world.
We would appreciate it if you could put an announcement in your paper about the book along with attached reviews and the url for his web site. www.bleanavonmountainthoughts.com The web site tells a little about the book and there is also an excerpt from the book there.

This is an announcement that the Boston Welsh language Learners Group (Boston-Cymraeg), will be meeting next Tuesday (1/24/06) at John Harvard's - 33 Dunster Street in Harvard Square, Cambridge - at 7pm. It's very close to the Redline Station. This group was formed by area locals who are similarly interested in learning but who had little or no previous experience and no luck in locating formal classes. Given the lack of available tutors, we decided to do it on our own. We will make use of the many language products available on the market, and hope to acquire more experienced or native speakers in the future to assist us. Presently modelled on gruop self-study, it is free and open to all. If you or someone you know is interested, please feel free to drop in for this casual meet-n-greet and to plan how to proceed. Also - once again I will implore that if anyone is willing to consider being a tutor, please step forward so we can discuss options. It could be a significant opportunity for someone to gain experience teaching - and fees can be negotiated so there could be financial incentives too. There are 12 members presently, and with ongoing announcements (via craigslist) the number will probably continue to grow. Diolch yn fawr -Allen Howell Marchogwr@aol.com

Come to California to Study Welsh This Year!
2006 is here, and Course organizers Brenda Jones Belaski, Maxine Garrison, and Sarah Stevenson are hard at work to ensure that Cwrs y Cwm Canol, The Central Valley Course (July 16 - 23, 2006), is a fun and educational experience. The course will be held at University of the Pacific in sunny Stockton, California, about 80 miles east of San Francisco. We've already updated the course website with details on how to get to Stockton, including airport information and driving directions. Please visit the following page for details: http://www.madog.org/cyrsiau/eleni/index.shtml
This year, Mark Stonelake will return for his third stint as Lead Teacher, presiding over a week of Welsh language classes, folk dancing, socializing, and singing—both spontaneous and organized. The entire teaching staff—all experienced tutors from Wales and North America—gets into the spirit of the the afternoon workshops, evening activities, and the Cwrs Eisteddfod, which presents awards for competition at three levels of language proficiency. The week will end with a special banquet and a noson lawen that celebrates cwrs participants' hidden talents as well as their newly acquired language skills.
The course will include an optional mid-week field trip to Sacramento, the capital of California, to visit the stately Capitol building and historic Old Sacramento, followed by a picnic dinner at a local park. Also notable about the 2006 course is a one-time scholarship for full tuition, room and board to commemorate the 30th Cwrs Cymraeg. Details about scholarships and online registration are available on the Cymdeithas Madog website at www.madog.org. The deposits are already rolling in, so don't wait too long to decide. Join old and new friends for a week of hwyl learning about the Welsh language and culture in California's fertile Central Valley.
